Matrix
Matrix is an open standard for chat: servers run by different companies exchange messages with each other, the way mail servers exchange email. XenRooms gives every company a Matrix server of its own, so it can chat with partners on any Matrix server – and is never locked into one vendor.

The Matrix specification is open; many servers and apps speak it, for example Element.
An open protocol means the chat does not depend on one company’s network.

Federation means servers exchange messages directly: a shared channel between two companies exists on both of their servers, each with its own copy.
Partners on Element (or another Matrix app and server) can chat with your team in shared channels and direct messages, if your administrator allows their server.
No. Federation only connects servers for the channels and direct messages that people share; everything else stays on your company’s server.
