# Your chat on a server of its own, *in Germany*

Every company on XenRooms gets a chat server of its own in our data centre in Germany (Hetzner) – no database shared with other companies – or runs it on its own servers with Xenaxio On-Premise. Messages travel encrypted; there is no end-to-end encryption, so that search, AI and your administrator can work.

## What you do with it

### A server of its own

Each company’s chat runs on its own Matrix server, separate from every other company.

### Germany or with you

Our data centre in Germany (Hetzner), or your servers with Xenaxio On-Premise.

### Plainly said

Encrypted in transit (TLS), no end-to-end encryption – like Slack, Teams and Mattermost.

### Open source and open standard

The web client is open source (AGPL), the chat server Tuwunel (Apache-2.0), the protocol Matrix.

## In detail

- A chat server of its own for every company, not shared with other companies
- Data centre in Germany (Hetzner) or your own servers
- Encrypted in transit (TLS); no end-to-end encryption, said plainly
- Passwords stored only as a hash; invitation and reset links valid for a short time
- The administrator decides who the team chats with outside the company
- Messages in channels shared with other companies are also stored on their servers
- The AI reads with each person’s permissions, never writes, no training on your messages
- Data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR) on request
- Web client open source (AGPL-3.0), chat server Tuwunel (Apache-2.0), protocol Matrix – no lock-in

## Questions

**Is XenRooms GDPR compliant?**

XenRooms is built for it: each company’s chat runs on its own server in Germany (Hetzner) or on its own premises, and a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR is available on request.

**Why is there no end-to-end encryption?**

With end-to-end encryption the server cannot read messages – so search, the AI summary and the administrator’s control would not work. Slack, Teams and Mattermost work the same way. Messages travel encrypted (TLS) and stay on your own chat server.

**Who can read our messages?**

The people in the channel, your administrator for administration, and the AI with the permissions of the person who asks. In shared channels also the other companies in them.

**Can we run XenRooms on our own servers?**

Yes, as part of Xenaxio On-Premise – together with email, calendar, files and your own AI model, if you like.
