Matrix

# What is Matrix?

Matrix is an open standard for chat: servers run by different companies exchange messages with each other, the way mail servers exchange email. XenRooms gives every company a Matrix server of its own, so it can chat with partners on any Matrix server – and is never locked into one vendor.

## What you do with it

### Like email, for chat

Your address looks like @anna:firma.xenrooms.app; partners write from their own server.

### Every company its own server

With XenRooms each company has its own Matrix server, in Germany or on its premises.

### Open and documented

The Matrix specification is open; many servers and apps speak it, for example Element.

### No lock-in

An open protocol means the chat does not depend on one company’s network.

## In detail

- Matrix: open standard for chat between servers (federation)
- XenRooms: a Matrix server of its own per company (Tuwunel, Apache-2.0)
- Chat address: @name:company.xenrooms.app
- Shared channels and direct messages with any Matrix server
- The administrator decides which servers the team chats with
- Messages of a shared channel are stored on every server in it
- No end-to-end encryption in XenRooms, so search and AI work

## Questions

**What is Matrix in simple words?**

An open standard that lets chat servers of different companies talk to each other – like email for chat. Whoever runs a Matrix server can chat with people on any other Matrix server.

**What is federation?**

Federation means servers exchange messages directly: a shared channel between two companies exists on both of their servers, each with its own copy.

**Can I use Element with XenRooms?**

Partners on Element (or another Matrix app and server) can chat with your team in shared channels and direct messages, if your administrator allows their server.

**Does Matrix mean our messages are public?**

No. Federation only connects servers for the channels and direct messages that people share; everything else stays on your company’s server.
